How long does it take to write a novel?

May 3, 2026

Short version: a 50,000-word novel runs in roughly 30–60 minutes of wall-clock time on Artistik, with most of the wait being LLM inference and the model rate limit, not human input. Cost ranges from $0.40 to $6.00 depending on which brain you pick.

Below: the benchmarks behind that number, drawn from about 100 runs across Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4, and Opus 4 over the past quarter.

The shape of a novel job

Every novel that comes out of Artistik passes through five phases:

  1. Brief intake — premise, audience, tone. Operator-driven; takes as long as you want it to.
  2. Story bible — characters, world, timeline. One LLM pass, ~3 minutes.
  3. Chapter outline — your approval gate. The agent waits.
  4. Per-chapter draft — the long phase. Each chapter is drafted, self-reviewed, sometimes revised. Most of the runtime lives here.
  5. Holistic edit + assembly — final pass, EPUB + PDF generation. ~5 minutes.

Wall-clock by model

Median runtime for a 50k-word novel, excluding human approval time on the outline:

ModelMedian timeMedian cost
Claude Haiku 4.532 min$0.62
Claude Sonnet 448 min$3.10
Claude Opus 471 min$8.40
GPT-4o-mini28 min$0.41
GPT-4o52 min$3.80
Gemini 2.5 Pro44 min$2.20

The cost numbers are before Artistik's plan markup. On the Pro plan ($29/mo, 1.4× markup), a Sonnet novel ends up around $4.30 charged to your balance.

What changes between models

Roughly:

What you actually have to do

Two human decision points per book:

  1. Brief. 2–10 minutes. The agent will ask follow-ups if your premise is thin.
  2. Outline approval. 5–15 minutes. Read the outline, suggest changes, approve.

That's it. After the outline is approved, you can close the tab — the agent emails you when the EPUB is ready.

The honest caveats

Every Artistik novel is a first draft. They are publishable, but they are not finished in the way a novel that's been through three rounds of editorial pass is finished. If you're shipping to KDP for personal income, that's fine. If you're submitting to a literary agent, you'll want a human editor on top.

The cost numbers above don't include images. Add a graphic-novel adaptation pass and you're looking at another $1–3 in DALL·E charges.
